Mia is a VERY willing helper in the kitchen. She begs to make lunch and when I am working in the kitchen she often asks if she can help. Just Cozy...

Esmé enjoying her tea...it is probably not as warm and cozy as it looks because she usually waits to drink it once it has cooled off (or requests more milk in it). Sometimes she decides it is 'too old' when it has sat too long and asks if she can put it on the counter. Funny girl.

This little love has been having a rough time lately being 'sandwiched' between two older girls and a cute baby sister. This can create some unlikable moments in parenting and I have to be more intentional about being tender towards her. It is so easy to become exasperated in these moments and to my shame this is more the norm for me. I love this lady and with God's grace, I will help her become more secure in her place in the family.

Company's Coming

We had some friends over for the afternoon back in October. It is so nice to socialize with fellow Moms, kids, and homeschooler's! Time for another afternoon Megan!

*Please note: Beautiful blue plate was found at Goodwill (along with 2 others)! I am becoming a thrift store lover. I used to be very discouraged at this 'hobby' but have a friend who insisted it was worth it. So I exercised the habit a bit and realized that even though the finds are not guaranteed, they sure bring some fun when they happen! This thrift store thing has actually become a stress release for me-on those days when your husband comes home and you beg to be let go from parenting duties for a bit, you might catch me at Goodwill! :O) My sister-in law apparently has the same outings once in a while!

Some Quick Points:

-We had our family pics done. You can check them out here. Juliana is a very gifted photographer. Thanks so much Julianna!

-I am SO looking forward to a sister’s weekend in Michigan. We did this about a year and a half ago. Such a blessing to have sisters and oodles of them at that! :O)

-Homeschooling is going well. It feels SO good to be in the groove of it. KENA (activities we participate in with our home school group) started today. I am grateful that KENA does not start the same week that school does and that we have time to establish a bit of routine first. In case you are curious how the logistics of school go for our family it is something like this:

Get up (I am not disclosing the time!). We are still in the rhythm of summer sleeping so the time is not good! Eat breakfast and send big girls (i.e. Mia and Ksena) upstairs to the school room to start handwriting. Brie usually goes along with them and is placed in front of a bin of toys. I quickly finish up tidying the kitchen or eat breakfast while the handwriting is going on and then make my way to the schoolroom with Esmé. I then help the girls with their math lessons and get Esmé going on her workbook. Brie is generally content at this point. By the time math is finished we are all ready for a break and a snack. After our snack we get outside rain or shine (I kid you not!) and walk a minimum of half a block-on a good day we will do a longer stretch. Brie LOVES this part of our morning and is starting to catch on to the rhythm of our days. The mail lady usually sees us walking and we smile and wave-she is part of our routine and it makes me smile. After this quick walk and fresh air, Esmé watches her ‘Ted movie’ (Leapfrog Alphabet DVD) downstairs and the rest of us head back upstairs to the schoolroom. Brie is not usually impressed about occupying herself at this point. We discovered that putting an old crib mattress on the floor for her to play on keeps her busy/happy for a while. The big girls then have their phonics lesson which we have found is a pretty fast paced curriculum with a LOT of exercises for one day. I read on Carmen’s blog that it is not the amount you cover in a book that counts but how well you have learned something. I will have to remember this when we are learning new phonics rules and not getting all of the exercises finished in one lesson. It is better to have the rules learned well then to just get the work pages finished. After phonics we read the story that goes with the lesson and then we usually do a Spelling Lesson. (My plan is to introduce some Bible, Science, and Geography into the routine but this will happen once our basics are well established and these extra subjects will only have a ‘sprinkling’ in our routine.)

It is usually Lunch time when we are finished but if we start rising earlier we will have a lot more time in our mornings!

(I guess that was not a quick point!)

-we have been on one spur of the moment field trip together to Great Lakes Farms. The apples were fun to pick, the corn maze was adventurous and the play area was a treat! I hope to take the girls again! My favorite apples (Mutsu) were not ripe yet so we need to go back!

-We are looking forward to gymnastics stating in October

-October…that reminds me. I am turning 30, Lord willing on Oct 2! AHHH! REALLY! I still feel 20 but slowly my mind is catching up to the fact that I am not a young adult anymore. I realize I am not old but I am certainly no teenager! I can say things like ’15 years ago back in high school…’

-our house is for sale. If you would like to see our ad here is the link. Jen & Scott are helping us sell privately by doing all the paperwork/photos to get it on Kijiji and MLS. I would say they have made our house look pretty good! Thanks guys! (Our first showing was a 'no show'! Nice practice whipping things into shape I guess!)

-My Brie turned a year on Sep 2! The little love is growing up and I have some mixed feelings about this! She sure is a treat-always smiling and so cuddly (except in the church nursery!). She is downright spoiled with love from all of us and I would say has a very enviable position in the family with all of the attention she gets!

-Ksena turned 6!!!!!!

-Mia and Ksena have started Piano lessons!!!! :O) :O) :O)

-My hard working man is So busy with Talbot Electrical. I am proud of this VERY good MAN!

Soaking up Some Rhythm

Well, the first day of school has past. The second day of school is finished as well. And on we were to the third this morning. Some moments I feel overwhelmed by the starting process and some moments I feel relief that we are ‘back to the books’. We are in the in-between time of summer with all of its carefree days coming to an end, and the beginning of a new rhythm with order and books! There is excitement and trepidation, stress and relief, business and order etc. The in-between sort of sets a balance. It can tip one way or the other but eventually we will find the rhythm of new order.

Yesterday afternoon, I suggested the girls color for a while and they chose to color their vowel pages! Score!! I sat sipping my tea and soaking up the beginning of a new rhythm for the mundane…and I smiled. When I was overwhelmed earlier, I had prayed and now I am feeling gratitude that He will be near as we find our groove for this school year.

I was reminded that I cannot look at the whole year, and the whole messy house (which is rather upside down from summer slacking and dudes renovating). Instead I just have to take the next step (only one!) and get to work- the ‘whole’ will be taken care of and with a thankful heart it will be taken care of pleasantly! And when I sin in the process, there is Grace enough to clean me up and trusting that grace I will move along with joy.

Wishing you God’s blessing as you start the routine of school in your families, whether it is through home educating or through seeing them off to school once again. Don’t forget to pray for God’s strength in your rhythm and remember His grace for the mundane. We have a King who cares for His people even in the changing of the seasons!

The Bahamas...March 2011

Dan and I went to the Bahamas in March. We went to the same place in the Bahama's a few years ago with Taun and Rob and our respective families. It was such a refreshing trip and I am so thankful that Dan's Mom and Dad were willing to take our crew of ladies for a week!

I started reading One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp the first day we arrived (or maybe even on the flight there...) This book is amazing but every sentence is a work of art and a meal to digest so I could not finish it on a holiday.

We used bikes to tour Harbour Island like a good Dutch couple should! It was a blast!!!

While we were touring a funeral procession went by-it was more like a parade with dancing and a band! The man leading the procession held a stick and he poked people who didn't move along properly.

Dan fishing from a boat that we had access to. There were no life jackets or a paddle on board...we mentioned this to a local and she laughed at us and said "all you need is a pair of 'flippas' " -Apparently if you have engine trouble and get stuck in the middle of now where (which we did) all you need is a pair of flippers to use while you swim and push your boat to shore...We ended up sitting in the blistering sun on the open ocean for about an hour and finally another boat came past. Just as they were about to pull us to shore our engine decided to work again.

Morning beauty...normally I do not get up early but I was sick so instead of trying to sleep I grabbed the camera and tried to catch the sunrise...

On our last day there a fellow Canadian (from Quebec) caught a Lemon Shark...at the beach we had been swimming at...not to worry though-it was only his third shark in about four days and Lemon Sharks are harmless. I did not know that there were 'safe' sharks out there...did you?! I will not believe it!

The Filling

Hebrews 2:17-18
17Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Calendars, schedules, lists, routine, rising early, going to bed on time, exercise, all of these goals have been weighing me down. I have been feeling the need to be more organized and run my household well. We are called to be intentional about our lives for Christ and these things fit into being intentional. So why do they not work perfectly and how is it I fail in these basic things?

I discovered today (anew) that none of these things are good by themselves. There is nothing we can do to order our lives properly aside from Christ. I have not intentionally tried new calendars or the self-discipline of rising early without my Jesus being a part of them. What I did, was slip into thinking that the goodness of these habits would bring goodness into my life-and to a degree they can be a blessing.

The theme that reoccurs in my life though, is failure. You probably all feel that at times. The new calendar is hard to stick too, and rising early is next to impossible without going to bed on time. We strive but we fall even though we expected to succeed because we had added something of value to our life.

I came to a point today where I needed Jesus SO badly. I am full of sin and failure and deep down I think that I am more forgiven when I strive to do better. Do you see how I have set myself up for failure!? I will only overcome if I live out of that forgiveness and do not think that anything I do makes me more worthy of that forgiveness. His forgiveness is complete in Himself and is not dependant on what I will do. What I will do MUST flow out of what He has done.

So I came to a place of pleading with my Savior today, and I begged for filling. I listened to the Revive our Hearts broadcast from April 28 and it was about Jesus being our High Priest. Not only has He wiped my sin away on the cross, He is TODAY, at this SECOND interceding on my behalf-that is how merciful He is and how utterly dependant I am on Him. Oh the completeness of His salvation and how lavish His love. His work of salvation was finished on the cross but He is still active for His people today!

It struck me that Jesus had been interceding on my behalf, for the spiritual battle I was fighting, and in His mercy, He filled me through the truth that was spoken on a radio broadcast. This Savior is REAL and cares about every detail of our lives. He made what was an ugly morning, into something that drove me to the cross. Thank you Lord!

I am not suggesting you throw out your Polestar Family Calendar (lol, Heather!). I am telling you that NOTHING from the simplest thing like a calendar, to the beauty of corporate worship, can be a blessing without the completeness of Christ. Does that make any sense to you? Please feel free to share how Jesus has blessed you as He actively intercedes on your behalf.

Ta-Da!

We have been reading the book 'Leading Little Ones to God' for Family Worship time. Tonight's story was about Jesus showing His disciples that He had risen from the dead. One of the questions following the reading was 'How did Jesus Surprise the disciples that Sunday night?'

Esmé answered "He said ' Ta-da.' "

As silly as this kiddo sounds, the fact that Jesus arose, has been very important to her as we read through the stories of Jesus' death. She would poke me (interrupting the story) and reassure me that "He will come back Mommy!"

We serve a risen Saviour and even a four year old can tell you this! It gives me confidence that a young child finds surety in the Resurrection. He has conquered death-now that is a true Hero.

Just Wondering…

I like our Prime Minister. He seems to me like the teacher that nobody at school likes, except for the kids who are willing to learn. The kind of teacher that does not play ‘friends’ with everyone and does not try to earn your attentiveness by making everything fun. Instead, they play hard ball. You have to work for a good grade and when you get that grade it tastes sweet. When you’re diligent in class they give you a wholesome break-something constructive but a break from the norm.

I imagine Mr. Harper is like that. He doesn’t give the media everything they want just so they can make easy news stories that have no content other than to destroy. He makes them work for an interview and is not easily accessible.

People who don’t like him accuse him of being a ‘yes man’. I think this means that the people who don’t like him, assume he stacks his parliament with people who bow to him and his ways. I have the feeling they are wrong and that the people who work for him respect him and that in general there is co-operation.

Ok, so I’ve said I like him and I really mean it. I admire him but…there is a BUT-a big one. I watched Peter Mansbridge’s interview with him on CBC. Maybe you did to. The tension between the two seemed tangible. Mansbridge is a tough interviewer and generally his questions are intriguing. In this interview, I find Peter rather bored with his job and got the feeling that he knows Harper is one of the better choices for Canada but it makes him squirm. ‘Coldly objective’ is what I would label that interview. (This is simply opinion-I do not pretend to have any knowledge in journalism or politics-but I do LOVE ‘people watching’ and this is the general feeling I had when I watched the interaction.)

In this interview Peter wonders what the current government would do if they had a majority government. He asks specifically:

PM: WOULD YOU RE-OPEN THE ABORTION ISSUE?

Harper answered:

PMSH: No, no. Look, Peter, I have spent my political career trying to stay out of that issue. It's one on which people, including in my own party, have passionate views. They're all over the map. And you know, what I say to people, as you know, many people I know are pro-life. What I say to people, if you want to diminish the number of abortions, you've got to change hearts and not laws. And I'm not interested in having a debate over abortion law.

Huh. Nice- it sounded good enough to give me something to think about. Could he be right? I am Pro-Life so this didn’t sit well with me but the way it was worded sounded almost right. Then this morning I came across this article: Abortionist arrested for stabbing newborns to death in clinic

Among the many things that struck me was that there was a ‘lack of records’ which means there are many crimes for which Gosnell cannot be charged. So that got me thinking that if there had been laws in place to keep records at abortion clinics, to actually keep detailed MEDICAL RECORDS regarding this procedure, then MAYBE, just MAYBE, at least more justice could be done in this case.

As far as I know, abortions require very little paperwork even though they are a major surgery. The amount of paperwork required for surgery (other than abortion) in Canada is significant. When I had my gall bladder removed I remember having my ‘pre-op’ with a nurse and it involved a lot of paperwork. It makes you think that the surgery you are planning on may have more risks than you had first thought. It makes it feel like a big deal. This pre-op happens way before the actual procedure which also makes you feel a little uneasy.

So WHY is it possible to have an abortion on demand in Canada! Is there a ‘pre-op’ required days in advance? Is information given regarding the possible health risks of this procedure? Is this something a government could regulate?

Could it be that a lack of paperwork in the abortion clinics might make a patient feel like this is a simple procedure, with minimal risks? Is a simple lack of paperwork, regulations and laws, deceiving women about the ‘surgery’ they are undergoing? Do they have any idea what effect this surgery could have on their future health? Do they even know that the ‘procedure’ is a surgery?

Could it be that a lack of laws regarding abortion are what make our hearts so callous or uninformed to the issue? Could changing laws not change hearts, Mr. Harper? Just wondering…

Beginnings-2011

Welcome, 2011! We are breathing in the fresh air of routine this morning at our house. Back to the school room for us! The year is new and the holiday rush is mostly over (we have one more party on the weekend). God is gracious, isn't He, in giving us a tangible new beginning? His mercies are new EVERY morning but doesn't it hit you more strongly at the beginning of a New Year. It makes my heart full of praise. I've seen this verse quoted more than once in relation to the New Year and I am going to quote it too:

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's
Psalm 103:1-5

Thank you Lord for the mercy of a New year and a new day!

Some things that make my heart glad about this new year:

Mr. Vandoodewaard is still with us! God is kind.
Taun's baby is almost due!-and she (they) will be living in Port Stanley this coming February ~~so that we can see them~~ so that the baby can be born in Canada.
Joel & Lynette are expecting a baby in July! (July 6)
Micah is here!!! (that one is singing in all of our hearts eh!)

Some things that have made my heart glad in 2010:

Brie Avery VanDyk was born in Sept! Thank you LORD for another child to raise in a covenant home!
Belinda had Gracie!!!! Eeeee. So fun to have babies in the same year!
Fellowship at our church which has been extra sweet lately.
Sisters-just love sister time!!! (Derek, I love you too...!)

This is Heaven!

You’ve heard it said ‘Now, this is Heaven!’ You may have felt such a thought as you held a beautiful new baby in your arms, or as you relaxed on your front porch with a steaming coffee. The thought may have entered your mind as you delighted in God’s spectacular creation on a peaceful vacation. There are so many pleasant, blissful experiences in this life that may make us think, ‘this is Heaven’.

I was chatting with Dan about our kitchen. He would like to redo it and I said ‘Is it really worth it-are we really going to live in this house long enough for it to be worth it. Will we really not be moving to the country anytime soon?!’ His answer was no. For a second, the image of country life flew through my mind and just as quickly God put a thought there that has stayed with me. “Heaven” He whispered sweetly to me.

Ahhh- Heaven! Who needs the country life when this fleeting world will be finished with, in the blink of an eye? Heaven will be so much more beautiful than the most awe striking country property-and it will last. That’s not to say that enjoying country life or any other pleasant thing is wrong. These things are meant to be enjoyed but in the contentment of knowing there are better things to come for God’s people. Suddenly my longing for the country felt like rags and our town home felt exactly where God wants me.

And it isn’t just the thought that Heaven will have more beauty-although that’s where my human mind can dwell. It’s that we have God’s presence to hope for. “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God HIMSELF will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Rev 21:3-4

Sunday we had a beautiful sermon on the reality of Heaven and this week Belinda has been mentioning teaching her kiddos about Heaven. These things have nurtured some thoughts on Heaven for me. My human mind is fickle and may not be dwelling on the most spectacular thing about Heaven but God will sanctify my thoughts and grow them to a fuller knowledge of the heritage He promises. God blesses us with things in this life that make us long for Heaven and if a simple thing like Micah wondering if we’ll be able to play baseball in Heaven directs our thoughts to the Heavenly kingdom, then praise God for the mundane.

Generally it is the suffering in life that makes us ache to trade this world for Heaven but if God’s Spirit dwells within you, the mundane can point you there, instead of distracting you from thoughts of eternity. Feel free to share things (suffering and/or the mundane) that have directed your thoughts towards HOME! And leave some verses too of the promise we have!

Here is a verse I love about Heaven:
"The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance. "

Manitoulin Island-Summer Vacation from July

We spent a week on Manitoulin Island. It is incredibly beautiful! To get to the island you need to take a ferry (or drive way up north to take a swing bridge). The kids kept calling the Chi-Cheemaun the 'tooth fairy boat'.

Swimming Lessons

Water Chalking

My kids LOVE painting everything with wet chalk. Mostly they just make big colorful puddles by dissolving the chalk in water. It keeps them busy and since Mia is the best 'cleaner-upper' in the world, I let them do it.

Year End Class Trip for Heritage Home Schoolers

We went to two places-the Indian Village in Longwoods Conservation Area and to Circle R Ranch.

Sitting in the 'Long House' listening to the crazy woman present. This woman was a bit of a nuisance to listen to. The kids did VERY well but I found myself struggling to stay polite. She was a bit intense and said strange things like 'Don't lean on the tree, it's not leaning on you!'.

Belly Shot

Belinda and I promised each other we would not let our shared pregnancies pass without a belly shot. Since Belinda's little one is ready to 'fall out', we felt the pressure to get the picture taken! Belinda is 38 weeks along and I am 27 weeks. It's always fun to share the journey with someone. Taun and I were both pregnant together with Mia and Tiana...the only downside to this is, you barely enjoy each other baby because you are so busy taking care of your own!

Did you know it only takes 4 main ingredients to make your own wraps!!! I mixed some whole wheat flour into mine so that makes 5 ingredients.

19 Week Ultrasound

We have no idea what the gender of this sweet baby is. It is not in the report...but I have to go back for another ultrasound in May because they didn't get to look at the spine or the face. SO, maybe it will be in the next report?! We aren't telling the gender if we do find out because we would love to keep it a surprise for our little ladies...so y'all can have fun analysing everything we say! ;O) ...my hunch is that it's a boy but either way we will be terribly excited.

Last Friday we drove to MI in the snow. We got to love on our nephews and niece for a bit and then stole their Mom for a night away. Happy Birthday Esmé!! 3 Years Old!

When I tuck this critter in at night, I am very thankful for her health. She reminds us often of God's grace in His care towards her. When she was born she spent 11 days in the hospital with a heart abnormality. It has not affected her since and the Dr's do not expect it to. Her last echo was in 2008 and her next one is in Sept 2010.

Apparently she felt left out at Christmas when we bought Mia and Ksena CD players for their room...'a player' was her birthday request.

Surprise Party for Dan's 30th Birthday!

Boy was Dan surprised! "Chill out Mel!!"....if you were there, you know exactly what that's all about! There were over 50 people in attendance from as far as Texas, Florida and Michigan! Motherhood 'Reflection'

I am hearing the sweet sound of Fernando Ortega Christmas and the music of my children playing together. This is very different from the sound of the raging tantrum from early this morning. Moms, you know the two VERY different feelings that these circumstances produce.

I struggle so much with seeing beyond the moment we are in. When the angry tantrum is happening, I should be trusting that even in this storm there is a lesson for me. But I rage back inside or out, and basically question why I have to deal with this. What good could there possibly be in a tantrum? Can't I learn the lessons God wants to teach me in another form?

I also see the ugly reflection of myself in my children's sin. I realize they will sin without my bad example, yet the mirror that children are, is a mercy from God. It displays truth. It hurts, it discourages, and it convicts.

There are huge lessons in the daily mothering storms. I should not question the form but see the beauty and the mercy that they represent. On the surface, they represent the fact that I HAVE children and that my storm is light in comparison to others suffering. Digging a little deeper, they represent the mercy of God in sanctifying me as a Mom, wife, and child of God.

The real question is, am I (are you) willing to embrace the lessons? I will fail at desiring to learn but the God who began this work in me, will NEVER stop teaching me. I am desiring the lessons but resisting the heat at the same time. Only a God of grace embraces a child like this. His mercies are new every morning-and every moment of the day!

A Short and Sweet Visit to Michigan
After the long drive...sweet sleep.

Our cozy room-it was fun to share a room with the girls until Ksena and Esmé fought over their stuffed animals in the middle of the night. They must have been half asleep because they had the right animals but insisted that the other had hers. This carried on for about 40mins! At one point I said "I am the Mom...etc etc!" and Ksena said "No I'm not!" I tried to clear up the confusion and said "Ksena, I said I am the Mom, not you". She answered "No you're not!!!" She was sleep talking and very confused and I had chosen a very dump time to clarify my authority.

Elise and Shaylynn stayed here while Mom and Dad were in Florida a few weeks ago. Let me tell you, these little sisters make awesome Big sisters! Our ladies LOVED all the attention! THANK YOU 'little sisters'! We enjoyed you being here.

Goin On a Bear Hunt...

Last week we went to New Liskeard to White Pine Lodge. It was a cold, rainy, windy week. The bears do not like wind because they can not hear well, so none of the men got a bear-much to the releif of all the wives!

First Day of School!

Our new home school room (the room right at the top of our upstairs) is fabulous. It has a lot of space and a wonderfully big window. It also keeps the mess off the kitchen table which is where we used to school. Mia thrives on structure and is happy to begin a new school year. She likes to know exactly how a day is going to unfold. The night before school she needed to know the day plan-down to details such as brushing our teeth before we school. I've incorporated 'story time' into our day, to discipline myself to nurture the appreciation of written work, in my children. It's easy to sluff it off due to laundry and other mundane activity but I think reading is a good thing to be intentional about.
